Local SEO basics that actually move the needle

Local SEO doesn't have to be complicated. For most small businesses, four things drive 90% of the result — get these right before worrying about anything else.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Add real photos, accurate opening hours, your service area and a proper description with the services you actually offer. This single profile is what powers the map results above the normal listings.

2. Be consistent with your name, address and phone (NAP). Whatever you use on Google should match your website footer, your Facebook page and any directories like Yell or Checkatrade. Mismatches make Google less confident about you.

3. Get reviews — and reply to them. A steady drip of genuine 5-star reviews beats one big batch. Set up a short link, text it to happy customers the same day, and reply to every review (good or bad).

4. Have a real page per service and per town. One page saying 'plumber covering Ashbourne, Uttoxeter and Cheadle' will lose to three focused pages that each speak to one town.

Nail these four and you'll usually start appearing in the map pack within 6–12 weeks without spending anything on ads.
